Do you feel ‘stuck’ in a stressed state?
Adrenal fatigue is caused when your body constantly operating in its sympathetic nervous system. This happens when you are chronically under stress, including stress you might not be aware of.
When we think about what stresses us out, obvious acute stressors come to mind. For example, a tight deadline at work, an unresolved argument with a friend or loved one, or a recent physical injury (stubbing your toe on the bed anyone??).
But there are many stressors you probably aren’t aware of, or you are aware but you brush them off.
An example of a subtle stressor is a spinal misalignment. Of course, if you try to heal yourself and ‘do everything else right’ subtle stressors like this could be holding you back from healing. Misalignment of the spine stimulates the sympathetic nervous system which acts on the body through the HPA Axis. As a result, your glands secrete stress hormones and you become stressed.
There are benefits of chiropractic care for those trying to heal from adrenal fatigue. Specifically, adjustments to the cervical vertabrae removes stress on the spine which activates the parasympathetic nervous system; our natural relaxed state. One way success can be measured is through heart rate variability, which shows the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
One study done in 2015 concluded that “…upper cervical spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) enhances dominance of parasympathetic [nervous system].”
In another study performed in 2006 on patients receiving chiropractic care from 96 different physicians, benefits of chiropractic care were found. “After 1 chiropractic adjustment, pain as analyzed by a visual analog scale was reduced significantly.” In addition, the mean heart rate of the patients in this study had also reduced.
The main thing to note about treating adrenal fatigue is that stress can come from a variety of different sources. You may have already experienced the effect of what works for one may not necessarily work for another, and it seems to be especially true with those suffering from adrenal fatigue. Cultivate body awareness and tune into your intuition. Ask yourself, what is stressing me out and be honest about it.
This is easier said than done, we often don’t want to admit to stressors, especially if we believe there’s nothing we can do about them. However, you know your body and your pain better than anyone. When you tune into the messages that your body is sending you, you can seek the right kind of treatment for your body’s specific needs.
