Estrogen is a hormone that must constantly be metabolized and detoxed from the body (mostly in our liver and digestive tract). If any of our detox pathways are impaired, estrogen may be properly removed. Estrogen then has the risk of getting reabsorbed into our body... contributing to more PMS, period issues, breast issues, and more.

If you have any gut issues like constipation or loose bowels, you could have issues with estrogen detox since a part of our microbiome (the estrobolome) is responsible for metabolizing and removing estrogen.

One of the best ways to support estrogen detox is to improve our gut health.

Here are some tips to improve estrogen detox.

Take magnesium 400mg of magnesium bis-glycinate to improve constipation.

Increase fiber by eating more nonstarchy veggies; try to make ½ of your plate nonstarchy veggies like zucchini leafy or leafy greens.

Avoid excess sugar, which could disrupt a healthy microbiome.

Avoid alcohol; alcohol can impair estrogen detox.

This image serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role ovarian health plays in our hormone health and vitality. 💫

Firstly, the follicles, which are the developing eggs, located in our ovaries are responsible for producing the majority of our estrogen during our menstruating years. 🌸✨ After the release of an egg during ovulation, the ovaries form a structure called the corpus luteum, which takes charge in producing most of our progesterone. 🌙

Extensive research has shown that our ovaries require specific nutrients to function optimally and support the development of healthy eggs. These include essential minerals, vitamins and healthy fats like zinc, omega-3, vitamin B6, vitamin C, as well as vitamin A, and antioxidant-rich foods like berries. 🌿🍓

If you want to increase progesterone, you need to understand why it's low. Low progesterone can contribute to skin issues, PMS mood swings, heavy periods, irregular periods, fibroids, and brain fog.

Low progesterone can also greatly impact fertility- both conception and maintaining a pregnancy. If you have multiple miscarriages, make sure you have your progesterone levels checked.

Here are eight reasons why your progesterone may be below.

1. Anovulation- You don't produce progesterone if you don't ovulate due to PCOS or hypothalamic amenorrhea.

2. Thyroid Issues– low thyroid hormone levels rob your ovaries of the cellular energy they need to ovulate and create progesterone.

3. Chronic Stress- your survival is a priority over your fertility. Stress causes cortisol to increase and reduce progesterone production.

4. Poor Egg Quality- poor egg quality equals low progesterone. Eggs are selected and mature over 100 days before being released at ovulation,

5. Inflammation- can interfere with the production of hormones and how well they can do their job. You can reduce inflammation through dietary changes.

6. Perimenopause– progesterone starts to decline after the age of 35. However, you can use natural treatments and nutrition to ensure this doesn't happen.

7. Postpartum– the natural drop in progesterone after birth can trigger hormone issues for some women.

8. Polycystic ovarian syndrome - if you have PCOS that causes long or non-existent menstrual cycles, you are likely not getting enough progesterone.

You can see that once you address the root cause, it's much simpler to find a course of treatment that's right for you.

A problem I see is how most people are not aware of the health benefits of ovulation. ⁠

It's still considered acceptable to be on hormone birth control (suppressing ovulation) until you're ready to have kids. ⁠
