The Power Of Essential Oils

Essential oils have a variety of hormone balancing benefits, which is why they have earned a place in my natural healing tool kit.

In fact, I’ve been working with essential oils in my health coaching practice since 2013. Since, then, I have seen essential oils help to eliminate menstrual cramps and relieve menopause symptoms. I often prescribe essential oils to my private clients because the oils are so effective. This article is a primer on how to use my favorite oils for hormone balance.

I use therapeutic grade essential oils from doTerra. If you take essential oils internally, use food grade oils. The quality of essential oils varies and not all oils are safe for consumption.

How Do Essential Oils Work?

Through inhalation, essential oils are transported directly to your brain and impact the limbic system, which controls mood and behavior. The scent of oils also stimulates the hypothalamus, the master controller of your endocrine system and hormone production. As you can see, inhalation is more powerful than the majority of people give it credit for!

How To Use Essential Oils

There are three main ways to harness the healing powers of essential oils. The method you choose depends on the oil itself and what result you want to achieve.

Inhale- apply 2-3 drops of oil to your palm, rub your hands together, and then cup your hands over your nose to breathe in the scent. You can also diffuse them into the air.

Topical- add oils to your skin care, a bath, a custom perfume or massage oil.

Ingest- if the oil is food-grade and non-toxic, it can be added to your water, food or elixirs.

Essential Oils for Women’s Hormone Balance

With numerous single oils and even more blends to choose from, how you do you know what oil will help with your hormone balance? Read on to learn what oils will help you balance hormones.

Stress Reduction

Scent has the power to influence your stress response quickly, which is why essential oils are more effective than herbs for this purpose. Stress increases the hormone cortisol, which lowers progesterone, thyroid hormone, increases inflammation and can impair inflammation long term.

Just inhale  when you’re feeling stressed to reap the immediate reward of relaxation. My favorites are lavender and eucalyptus, but in truth any oil that you find relaxing is the perfect one for you.

Estrogen & Progesterone Balance

Some oils contain natural phytoestrogen which can restore balance to your estrogen and progesterone levels. If you’re looking to balance your menstrual cycle or ease menopause symptoms, these oils are for you. Some phytoestrogen oils are lavender, clary sage, basil, and geranium. Vitex is one of the only oils that promotes progesterone.

Libido Support

If you can’t focus on yourself or your partner, use essential oils to reduce stress and call yourself back into your body. If you want to go further, sandalwood supports testosterone and the Passion blend by doTerra incorporates damiana, which acts as an ‘on-demand aphrodisiac’. I recommend inhaling these oils, or including them in a perfume.

Estrogen Detox

Do you have symptoms of estrogen dominance like PMS, breast tenderness, heavy periods, bloating or weight gain? You may want to start with an estrogen detox. Citrus oils like grapefruit, lemon and wild orange can help remove petrochemicals (which have endocrine disrupting phytoestrogens) from your body. Add a couple drops to your water in the morning for a fresh start to the day.
